"The Battersea Park Road to Enlightenment", "For Tibet, With
Love", "Men"! e "The Battersea Park Road to Paradise".
responder a algumas questões.
Biblioteca Municipal de Mondim de Basto - Tell us a little
about you: former actress, singer, tv producer, author. How did you do all this? Tell us about all
this.
isto.)
Isabel Losada - We have something in the UK now we call
'Portfolio Careers.' That is, it is rarely enough to do just one thing to make
a living - especially if you are an author.
But in my case I had these careers one after the other so I feel as if
I've had many incarnations in this lifetime. I started as an actress who also
sang when I left school and then after making the same 'mistakes' that so many
make 'got married' - 'had a child' - 'got divorced.' I had to change my career. Of course I do not regret having a daughter
but trying to be a single parent and an actress was just not realistic so I
went back to university and re-trained.
(The Government used to pay for such things - ha ha - but no longer)
then I had 6 years in TV production until I realised that I never watch TV so
perhaps working in this area was not really for me. Then I started writing books and I've been
happy and poor ever since.
universidade e mudei a minha formação.
Comecei, então, a escrever livros e estou feliz
e pobre desde então.)
BMMB - How do you feel knowing that you've sold more than
100.000 copies and your book is translated into 16 differente languages?
I.L - I have five books published now and yes, they are in
many languages. How do I feel? Well, I feel happy because I get letters from
readers that say, 'your book made me laugh out loud on the train.' And I always think that if I die tomorrow
this will have been enough. To have made
some stranger, that I have never met, laugh out loud - this is to have made the
world a better place just a little. What
a joy to create laughter. Any other
inspiration that the books may serve is a bonus.
BMMB - Tell us about your books. You combine comedy with
serious subject matter using your own life experience. From "New
Habits" to "The Battersea Park Road to Paradise" From convents to taking drugs in the jungle
via Tibet and interviewing the Dalai Lama?
(Fale-nos dos seus livros. Combina comédia com assuntos
sérios e usa as suas experiências pessoais. Desde "New Habits"até
"The Battersea Park Road To Paradise". Desde conventos até consumir
droga na selva via Tibet e entrevistando o Dalai Lama.)
I.L - All the books are real life research into
happiness. Not the smiley falsely
positive US version of happiness but real happiness which comes from a
different place. Humour is essential in
life isn't it? No matter what comes our
way humour is a sign that we can take ourselves lightly. I can think of no situation in which some
kind of humour isn't appropriate. My
late Aunt was making jokes on her death bed.
I said to her, 'Well, at least you never lost your marbles.' (a way of saying 'your remaining brain
cells') and she said, 'No, I didn't did I Angela?' She knew very well that my name isn't Angela
even though she could barely speak. So
yes, to find our own happiness (in order to be able to share it with others) -
or to make the world a little better in whatever way we are able… humour is
part of joy and I think celebration is what it's all about. His Holiness The
Dalai Lama says that the purpose of life is happiness. So it turns out that I chose a good subject.)
é a felicidade. Então acho que escolhi um bom assunto.
BMMB - How did you start writing?
(Como começou a escrever?)
I.L - Mae West once said that, 'If you keep a diary - one
day it may keep you'. And that's what happened to me really. I suppose it's a cliche but I was an only
child so I think I first started writing a diary (when I was twelve) for
company. Then later on I realised that
keeping it helped me sort out what was in my head. So I used to talk to my diary and now I talk
to my readers in very much the same way. My diary never seemed to judge me and
I always feel as if my readers don't either - or if they do, I don't hear
them. So I love writing… for me it is
one long conversation. The difficulty with being an author all the part of the
job that goes with the writing, plus the fact that's it's now very badly
paid. So I always advise people - if you
don't LOVE writing - then don't do it.
BMMB - You also do comedy presentations? Is it in your
nature be funny? You're never blocked or nervous when appearing before an
audience?
I.L - I was an actress for ten years. I love being the
centre of attention and making people laugh.
No, I never get nervous because I don't care what people think about me.
I just concentrate on what I want to say that I know is of value for people. I
present the best of what I have learnt in all my books and I have ways of
presenting the material that makes people laugh. If you read my books you'll understand why
people laugh. I just tell the truth about some of the absurd things I've done
and what an idiot I've made of myself.
Really you have to laugh when the speaker is so absurd.
(Eu fui atriz durante 10 anos. Adoro ser o centro das
atenções e fazer as pessoas rir. Não, nunca fico nervosa, porque não me importa
o que as pessoas pensam de mim. Apenas me concentro naquilo que quero dizer e
absurdo.)
BMMB - Do you have a favourite author?
(Tem algum autor favorito?)
I.L - Well, you know I'd have to say that my favourite
author is me. Really. If I didn't love my books then how could I
expect anyone else to read them? I love the subjects that I explore (I'm
currently writing about sexuality - it's really hard) and I love the way that I
make the subjects easy to read but make sure that I give the reader real
value. With some authors I feel that
they are really talking to themselves and I hope I don't do that. I hope I'm
really listening to how the reader is reacting. Not many people write in the
way that I do. I suppose the most recent book I've read that is in any way
similar is Caitlin Moran's, 'How to be
Woman.' which is wonderful and which I'd like to give to every woman I
know under the age of 30 - along with 'The Battersea Park Road to
Enlightenment.'
Morans "How to be a woman", que é maravilhoso e que gostaria de
Park Road to Enlightenment.' )
BMMB - From all books that you have written, which is your
favourite?
I'd have to say, 'For Tibet, With Love; A Beginner's Guide
to Changing the World' (which sadly hasn't been bought by any Portuguese
publisher so has not been translated) - but it's a book about my own attempts
to help the Tibetan cause. It makes
people both laugh and cry. I'm so proud
of it I really can't believe that I had anything to do with writing it. As to books not written by me - well it would
probably be a book of poetry written by Rumi.
It's impossibly not to fall in love with Rumi even though he died in
1273.
(Tenho de responder
For Tibet, With Love; A Beginner's Guide to Changing the World' (que
Quanto a livros
1273.)
BMMB - Do you know Portugal?
(Conhece Portugal?)
I.L - I don't. But if
anyone would like to invite me to a book festival then I usually accept. I would be delighted to know Portugal. I am very proud to have my books in
Portuguese. Thank you for reading them.
festival/feira do livro, geralmente eu aceito. Ficaria encantada em conhecer
Portugal.
BMMB - What are your plans to future?
(Quais os seus planos para o futuro?)
I am writing a book about sexuality at the moment because so
many people seem to have sex lives that don't please them. As I have always
said that happiness is my subject - pleasure is surely a necessary part of
happiness. Anyway it's the most
difficult thing I've ever done. I am going for a 'tantric massage' next week. I
have absolutely no idea what this will include.
So I'm mildly terrified as you may imagine.
imaginar.)
BMMB - Leave a message for all your fans and to those that
dream of writing a book.
Really? OK - so 1.
For any fans of mine reading this… thank you SO much for reading and enjoying
my books. It means a lot to me
really. Please buy one more copy and
give one to a friend of yours - because if the books sell well then the
publishers will make a profit and then they may accept my new book on sex. If
there is no profit then they won't buy it and you won't get to read it. :-)
Also if you have ten minutes to spare - please write to my publishers and say,
'I believe that Isabel Losada has a book about Tibet and the Dalai Lama' Please can we have it please? They will have
to write to Bloomsbury publishers in London to buy the right to bring it to you
in Portugal. None of the money will ever
come to me (long story) but it's a wonderful story and you'll love it.
2. If you dream of writing a book.. stop dreaming and write
the first 3 chapters. When people ask me, 'How to you write a book?' I usually
come out with the annoying answer, 'One word at a time.' But even before you do
that - do you research - what is similar?
How will it sell? What is the
audience? Who will buy it? Why?
These are all the questions that you will have to answer to a publisher
who will be be deciding whether to buy your book to publish it. So better to know the answers before you
write it. And only write a book if you love writing. If you don't love writing then go and do
something that you do love to do. Life
is short.
(A sério?
A vida é curta.)
